He noticed when mom needed small things and was very attentive to her. He made sure she had the treats that she loved as well.
Our 89-year-old mother was in the hospital for a week with atrial fibrillation and difficulty bringing her heart rate down to an acceptable level. Justin was her nurse for at least 4 days while she was there. He is by far the best nurse that I have ever had an experience with. All the nurses were very good, but Justin was far above the level of the others. He is so compassionate. When our mother asked the same question numerous times, he patiently explained in terms that she could understand. When she didn't ask for things because she "didn't want to bother him," he anticipated her needs and brought her what she needed.
We asked many questions, including what all the numbers were on the monitors. He explained them to me and then later to my brother, teasing me that I couldn't explain it. He is so good-natured and has developed a great rapport with both our mother and the family.
She had never experienced A-Fib before, so it was scary for all of us. He explained how the heart works and what the risk is. When a person understands the situation, it is very comforting and much easier to deal with. He noticed when mom needed small things and was very attentive to her. There were several times that we had questions for the doctor, but we, as a family, had missed rounds. Rather than giving us a vague answer, he was very quick to reach out to the doctor directly to answer the question and even asked him to swing back around for us one morning so the family could understand the situation. I cannot think of a single thing that he could have done differently. He truly exemplified every one of Mayo's RICH TIES values. In addition to caring for our mother with such compassion, kindness, and expertise, we felt like we gained a friend.
