I know how well respected Jonathan is by each and every nurse on our unit, and I see every single day I go to work how he has influenced a change on our unit for the better of the unit, its outcomes, the patients, and the staff working here.
Jonathan goes above and beyond for the safety of the patients and the learning of the staff. He keeps a clear and open line of communication open for opportunities for improvement as well as shoutouts to exemplary staff

Jonathan frequently checks in with staff members and keeps staff updated on changes and opportunities for improvement

Jonathan always makes himself available at a moment's notice. He is quick to get to the bottom of questions or concerns

Jonathan continuously gives kudos or shoutouts to staff who had a good catch or exemplary performance

Jonathan exhibits excellence in communication on a daily basis. There is a very special way he is able to communicate with staff, providers, etc., with such tact and respect, regardless of the topic he has to discuss. He finds a way to be neutral in his approach while being the #1-unit advocate for the Culture of Safety. There is something so unique in being able to have difficult conversations with staff without being accusatory; staff feel welcome and encouraged to approach him with safety concerns or mistakes without fear of being judged or punished. I have witnessed Jonathan address so many safety concerns, listening, asking appropriate questions, and quickly acting upon them in order to prevent them from happening again.

Jonathan has helped to establish a very healthy relationship of trust between himself and the employees in our unit, as I described earlier. I know that he always serves as a neutral ear to listen to any mistakes or concerns and to help you take further action. He is someone who shows up daily to work with a goal to truly improve the experience and performance of the staff on our unit, patients, families, and our colleagues across all disciplines. He listens and acts accordingly, regardless of how large or small the concern. Watching such an effective and inspiring leader show such compassion to those on our unit inspires me on a daily basis. I've often told other people that I hope one day to be half as good as a leader as he is. The amount of support he provides to all nurses, leaders, and providers on the unit is a feat, and he always manages to do so with a smile on his face, and the ability seems to come so naturally.

Jonathan makes it a point to be readily accessible and available to his entire staff. He has made his schedule to overlap with the night shift (often coming in at 5:30 a.m.- 6:00 a.m.), which makes all the difference for me as an NC on the night shift. I always know that when he shows up with open ears, I am able to address any concerns I may be experiencing and will get the help or response I might need. I know that the rest of the night shift appreciates this as well, as there are often questions or quality/safety concerns that are so helpful to discuss with him directly. When he is not on the floor, he's one of the most responsive people to emails and always follows up with the concerns brought to him. It is amazing to see how effortlessly he organizes the plethora of concerns from any staff on the unit and somehow is able to follow up on all of them nearly effortlessly. He always challenges me as a fellow leader to reflect and critically think about my own response to my colleagues. I have felt so much growth in these reflections he has led me through. It is such an honor to have such an approachable leader to be open and honest with, and I find the feedback I receive from him invaluable.

Jonathan primarily promotes and enhances the image of nursing in identifying safety concerns that develop, digging to the root cause of the concerns, and developing an action plan to prevent future safety concerns from happening again. His dedication in problem-solving any practice issues we might be experiencing as nurses on the floor helps to smooth practice in the future and supports the image of safe practice in nursing.

As a unit leader for the past year under Jonathan's (and Dana's) leadership, as well as a nurse on the unit since 2019, I have always appreciated the natural leadership abilities that he has proven, which I know may go underrecognized. I have worked in many different float pool positions under wide variances of leadership teams and have not found any leader that measures up to the inspirational leadership style that Jonathan has adopted and brings to work in his everyday practice. There is something so special in the way that he embraces his knowledge of critical care practice and the needs of the unit while also being aware of his approach to the staff he is working with. I know how difficult a position like his may be; there is a never-ending list of improvements for the unit and gaps in educational needs to be addressed. He approaches each and every nurse with such a compassionate manner that I find inspiring and aspire to master as a leader one day. I know how well respected Jonathan is by each and every nurse on our unit, and I see every single day I go to work how he has influenced a change on our unit for the better of the unit, its outcomes, the patients, and the staff working here.
