This is an excerpt from your nominations:

Please accept this nomination of Jon Medeiros BSN, RN, Advanced Practice Manager (APM) from the Emergency Department and CPPI as a deserving recipient of The DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Jon consistently meets the criteria of this award and is the kind of nurse leader who is recognized as an outstanding role model.

Jon has been a valued team member at The Miriam Hospital for more than 30 years, demonstrating a strong commitment to our organization and our community.  As an emergency nurse since 1997, Jon excelled and flourished as an astute clinician, quickly becoming a go-to nurse on the unit.  Early in his tenure, Jon was an informal leader who demonstrated excellent teamwork and quickly developed advanced skills as a triage nurse, charge nurse, and preceptor. As a preceptor, Jon honed his craft.  He helped develop some of the strongest, able, dedicated clinical nurses the department had ever seen.  Jon was consistently a valued support on our unit for other nurses and remains so to this day.  As a permanent charge nurse, Jon used some of the principles learned from his experience within the food service industry and his landscape architecture training to excel at patient flow and throughput management.

As an APM since 2022, Jon became a formal nurse leader during some of the most challenging times in healthcare.  When he joined the ED leadership team, our vacancy had soared to a staggering 41% during the pandemic.  Jon demonstrated a can-do attitude and spirit in facilitating the largest number of new graduate cohorts we had ever seen in our department.  In doing so, he assisted our department to reduce our nurse vacancy to as low as 6% in 2024.  Jon also worked to contemporize our department-specific training programs and strengthen the didactic, hands-on and scenario-based learning our nurses find most meaningful.  An APM who provides valued practical training in class and hands-on support at the bedside, Jon is often recognized by our clinical nurses during check-ins as a standout in our on-boarding program. These qualities have lent to the improved retention of our newest team members.  Aside from this, Jon has helped implement important new professional development programs in our ED, becoming a Safety Care Instructor, and developing a training program, became a Trauma Nurse Certified Instructor and helped to develop a training program for our staff, became an ultrasound guided IV instructor, and developed a training program.  Jon also helped successfully develop a new training program to support our international travel nurses who have unique professional development needs and has received accolades from them on how instrumental he was to their learning in a new country.  Jon is often the first to volunteer to support new graduates who are pursuing their BSN education by writing letters of recommendation for them to receive scholarship support.  As a volunteer mentor, Jon has worked directly with new nurses within the newly licensed nurse residency program and in a reverse mentoring program in the ED.

I had the privilege of knowing Jon since I started working as an ED secretary in 2010.  We worked even closer as an RN in 2017.  Jon is a Jack-of-all-trades, a master of none, but often better than a master.  Ask Jon any question, and you’ll be sure to get the answer you need to guide your interests or concerns.  From plumbing and fishing to electrical work, home improvement, raising chickens and especially emergency care, Jon is like a walking encyclopedia.  He’s sure to have the answers to fill your inquiring mind.

When I started as a novice ED nurse, I was always observant of the department and watched and learned from my colleagues.  Jon was a role model for many of us, including myself.  I watched him work and learned from his expertise.  Jon would sweep the floors, then quickly return to providing high-quality patient care.  He would also provide real-time teaching to novice nurses, allowing them to experience nursing firsthand.  Afterward, he would return to charge duty to ensure smooth operation within the department, yet he always had a smile on his face.

When Nancy Robin retired as ED educator, Jon was the perfect candidate to fill Nancy’s role. He had years of experience working at The Miriam Hospital, including years of emergency care. He also had the ability to inspire, influence, and guide nurses to achieve their maximum potential.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused enormous strain to our hospital, most of the experienced ED nurses left the department entirely.  There were only a few remaining to teach the incoming ED RNs.  Jon made a significant impact on the productivity of the ED by providing the education and skills that laid the foundation for the growth of the ED today.

From day one, Jon made me feel so comfortable being a new grad nurse.  I had a few years under my belt in the emergency department as a scribe, but transitioning to the role of nurse was much more challenging than I anticipated.  For a while, I had an intense fear of showing up to work.  Jon helped to quell my anxieties about caring for critical patients, making me realize that I am only one person, and I always have a team to help me during those challenging cases. Hearing his stories of the time he would take to decompress and go hiking on his days off increased my motivation to practice more self-care in the face of challenging and emotionally/physically draining shifts.  Jon has always provided me with a soundboard to listen to how my tough shifts went after working a twelve and a half hour overnight.  Jon took me under his wing and helped me navigate the various emotions and challenges that presented themselves early on in my training at The Miriam.  His calm composure, confidence, kindness, and humility are qualities I strive to maintain throughout my life, no matter where I end up.  His approach to teaching is something I aspire to in my own career.  He calmly approaches the subject material and presents it in a digestible way and offers real-world lessons and experiences from his own practice to tie everything together.

I remember one shift a few months ago, Jon came out to the floor and calmly explained how to set up a chest tube for a patient that needed one emergently.  He helped grab all the supplies for me and explained how to get everything ready for the MD and then maintain the chest tube after the insertion was completed.  I am forever grateful for his help and support, not only in that critical situation, but throughout my entire time here at The Miriam as a nurse.

I have known Jon my whole life, and he is very much the same person outside work as he is in. He is kind and funny and goes out of his way for others.  As soon as I started my nursing career at Miriam, I knew I had made the right choice in where I was working, especially in the department.  Jon was a huge part of that.  Our classes were always fun, informative, and Jon had stories and words of encouragement for every question and doubt.  He helped each of us learn our own style of nursing – to bring humor to our work, really listen to our patients, and understand just how important that responsibility is –plus, he baked for us =).  I have, on a few occasions, found myself needing an ultrasound IV line –one quick phone call and "I'll be right there" from Jon.  He jumps on the floor and right into patient care without a blink, instructing and encouraging the whole time.  Jon not only gave us the tools we needed to be successful in nursing, but he encouraged us to make them our own.  I have never hesitated to ask for help or guidance, and know that he will always be there with advice or a joke or a piece of banana bread.  I cannot say enough good things about Jon.

Jon has been one of the pillars for my successful transition as an international nurse.  He would ask how I am doing on the floor, and far as I can remember my reply was always, I need to work on my speed.  His reply was "speed will come, once your delivering safe care, everyone started off being slow".  Those short interactions boosted my confidence and lessened my anxiousness. Also big on clinical support, there were questions I pitched to my trainers who they referred me to Jon and surely, he had an answer.  This support has further led me to admire his energetic teaching style.  The last class I attended with Jon was the Triage Class.  The literature was easily grasped.  He had a myriad of stories and past experience which we could compare with the information being thought.  Though the class was lengthy, he was able to keep our attention alive. Jon can effortlessly communicate with all age groups effectively, and very approachable, I enjoyed his art of baking "banana bread".  In short, Jon is an amazing person and a Leader at heart.  His support to international and local nurses is unmatched.  Whatsoever accolade that is considered for him is rightly deserved.

Jon is a wonderful person whose kindness and approachability have significantly impacted my transition to both the job and the city.  As my clinical educator, he provided invaluable support with weekly refreshers to ensure I was always up to date with the latest practices and protocols.

His deep clinical expertise made learning from him an enriching experience.  Beyond his professional role, Jon also took the time to help me settle into my new surroundings, guiding me on where to go in town and even taking me on a memorable hike.  His dedication to both his work and the well-being of others truly sets him apart.

Uncle Jon, appropriately named for his fun laid back can and will help with anything personality.  Jon has mastered all the qualities of a great educator.  He knows literally everything, yet creates a comfortable, non-judgmental environment for learning, encourages any and all questions, and then explains it in different ways until he finds something that resonates with the learner.  I can't imagine going through the course without him.  Now, almost a year after starting, he still checks in and provides a feeling that everything will be fine when he is present.

Jon is a phenomenal teacher; his Jon class was something I looked forward to each week.  I truly feel like his wisdom and knowledge helped me grow into the nurse I am today.

Aside from being an extraordinary resource to our Emergency Department staff, Jon is compassionate.  He sees and values the importance of personal relationships with individual staff members.  I have seen Jon stop far too many times to count to allow someone to talk or cry something out, all while listening without judgment and offering help and wisdom where he can, or a box of tissues and empathy if he cannot.  During our classes, Jon has shown me the importance of getting to know each learner, allowing them to talk and at times digress into conversations that support their emotional wellbeing over clinical expertise, but still ensuring we get back to cover the necessary content.

Jon goes above and beyond, baking treats and goodies for multiple classes, always bringing humor and making every learning situation fun, and going out of his way to make someone’s day.  He has built relationships that make staff feel safe, heard, and cared for.  They all know that they can come to the office to celebrate victories or cry through the difficult parts of the job or personal life.

I have been on the receiving end of much of Jon’s life and work wisdom.  I have been blessed to share an office and work closely with Jon and learn the true value of relational leadership as he exemplifies it for all. As much as Jon will humbly attempt to say someone else should get this award, I can think of no one more deserving.
