I have no idea what was said, but the nurse showed true advocacy and passion for the job and devotion to patients.
Where do I start! I am a sickle cell patient and normally would be sent to 10A, where the nurses are used to getting bugged every 3 hours for this or that. I had been in a sickle cell crisis for a few days already and was in excruciating pain. I had been receiving my treatment all day, but I felt really alone. I knew the staff was busy with other patients. I was hurting and feeling down and out until I met my night shift nurse. I immediately felt an aura of care and protection from the moment the nurse introduced themself. It was warm, kind, and attentive. Everything I needed while crying and fighting through such horrible pain. The next day went by, and I hit a roadblock in my care. My pain management orders fell off, causing my pain to increase to an uncontrollable level. The worst thing about this was that no one noticed my orders had changed until two hours before the shift change. I tried to get help restoring my medications, especially before the doctors left, but my worst nightmare happened; no luck at all. To me, that meant I was going to suffer all night long in pain. I began to cry from the pain and the fear, and the frustration of what my crisis was going to put my body through. Would I collapse my lung from holding my breath, so I don’t feel the pain? Would I go into cardiac arrest because I cannot handle the pain? These were all things that had happened to me before. Then, my night shift nurse walked in again. My eyes lit up seeing that I would have the same nurse caring for me. The nurse saw and felt my agony, and even though the main doctors had left, this nurse still decided to fight and advocate for me. I have been in the hospital many times, and I know how hard it is to get the night doctors to change or add any orders. They tend to say no, and you’re just left to suffer until the day doctors do their rounds. As I rocked back and forth, crying, heart racing, and feeling like I couldn’t fight off the pain anymore… the nurse walked in and said, “I’m on the phone with the doctor… an order is being placed.” I was so thankful! Later, I found out the nurse was able to get me enough orders to cover me for the night; you have no idea how rare that is! The nurse fearlessly got on the phone and expressed concerns to the doctor on my behalf. I have no idea what was said, but the nurse showed true advocacy and passion for the job and devotion to patients. The nurse continued to care for me in the following days and consistently showed compassion and dedication. I will always have a special place in my heart for this nurse. Even though the nurse was just as busy as the others, there was still time made to make me feel important enough to fight for. Thank you!
