She didn't just treat a patient, she gave him hope by reconnecting him with nature's warm embrace.
Jeraldine "Jhie" is an extraordinary nurse whose clinical skill, compassionate heart, and quiet leadership have transformed a patient's six-month hospital stay from confinement to hope and from silence to a voice that said, "thank you". Our stroke patient, with right-sided hemiplegia, had been on bed rest for months, staring at the same 4 walls, his world shrinking with every passing day. Jhie refused to accept these limits as the final answer. With unwavering clinical judgement, she collaborated with physical therapy to transition him from bed to a custom wheelchair for early mobility. For the first time in weeks, we could wheel him into the hallway. The walls disappeared. His eyes lit up. But Jhie did not stop there. Recognizing his frustration at being unable to speak because of the tracheostomy, Jhie advocated fiercely for a reevaluation by Speech-Language Pathology. Thanks to her persistence, that patient was fitted with a Passy-Muir valve. His first words: "Thank you". It was miraculous. He also said, "Jhie, Jeraldine," clear as day. He began to count: One...two...three... all the way to ten. Everyone in the room became teary-eyed. And then came the moment that redefined care in out unit. One quiet afternoon, Jhie wheeled him outside, not just to a window, but into the sunshine. She tilted his face toward the light, and for the first time in months, he felt the warmth on his skin. She didn't just treat a patient, she gave him hope by reconnecting him with nature's warm embrace. That single act of compassion sparked a movement in the care of this patient. Now, several of the nurses on the floor say, "Can I take him outside to see the sunshine today?" That is leadership, not by title but by example.
Jhie doesn't just see possibilities, she creates them. She treats every patient in the MICU like family, anticipating needs before they're spoken. She also exhibits leadership within the unit, leading with humility and heart. Her clinical excellence is matched only by her humanity. Jhie is hardworking, efficient, reliable and a real team player. I have witnessed her commitment and dedication to the veterans and their families and to her coworkers. She goes above and beyond the call of duty. Please honor Jhie with the DAISY Award. She doesn't just care for the physical needs of the patients in the unit, she helps restore their souls, one wheelchair ride, one spoken word, one ray of sunshine at a time!
