Jenny always has a smile on her face and is the first to reach out and help others.
There are many instances in which Ms. Jenny has gone above and beyond for our LAC+USC Medical Center patient population. One that recently stands out that I am now writing her nomination letter was an incident that occurred a few weeks ago. We have a new program called Safer @ Home. This program allows our patients to return to the comfort of their homes sooner. They receive the additional service of going home with equipment to monitor and care for the patient. They will also receive daily calls from the nursing team to check their well-being. This program was set only for Covid discharges but has now opened to other disease processes. It is also a program under the watchful eyes of our hospital executive team and DHS.

Now that I have explained this program, it is time to explain what Jenny did for a patient to show why she deserves the DAISY Award. She was following a patient placed on the Safer @ Home track. She attempted to call the patient, leaving voicemails, and sending text messages to the patient to contact her. Jenny had to make her daily call to this patient but was unsuccessful. So, she enlisted social work’s help to find the home address. Jenny then created a letter for the patient to contact us or come to UCC for follow-up as we had not been able to get a hold of him telephonically or electronically. She ensured the letter was certified and walked it to the mail room. Two days later, the patient contacted Jenny, saying he had given the wrong phone number in error. He was then assessed over the phone and given an appointment for follow-up. Without her determination to contact this patient, it could have had a less-than-desirable outcome for the new program.

This is the type of nurse Jenny Silva is. She takes excellent care of our patient population, whether over the phone or answering many questions in person for our patients of all ages and cultures. Whenever Jenny is working, you see the compassion in her eyes and the extreme patience she has for all our patients. She goes above and beyond all the time and will sit down with the patient and act like she has all the time in the world for them. She is never bored or gets frustrated with some of our more difficult patients.

*****

When Jenny transferred to Urgent Care from Observation, I knew she would be a blessing for our family-oriented team. She also goes above and beyond for her colleagues and more importantly for the patients of the Urgent Care whether in person or on the phone. She never rushes her patients and always ensures they understand their diagnosis, medication, and follow-up instructions before they leave the area. When she is working either ED-X or Safer @ Home, she takes her time speaking with patients and is never bothered when they may ask a million questions. She will go out of her way to aid lost patients at the Medical Center where they need to go. She will call their appointment areas to let them know they were lost but are on their way. I am always taken aback by Jenny’s humility when a patient gives me a compliment about her or tells her personally. With some of our most trying patients, Jenny’s kindness and caring never change. She knows they are going through something and goes the extra mile for them. No matter what is going on Jenny always has a smile on her face and is the first to reach out and help others. That is why when I heard how Jenny would not give up looking for a Safer @ Home patient whom she could not contact by phone it did not surprise me. Her tenacity and sheer will to find this patient became her goal at which she succeeded. Being her former manager, it was always a joy to work with Jenny and I will always miss our check-in conversations in the office.
