Jackie Lugo, MS, BSN, RN, CRRN, the Nurse Professional Development Specialist for JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI), is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that enhance clinical competency and patient outcomes.

She ensures that nurses and interdisciplinary team members are equipped with the latest evidence-based practices, innovative solutions, and cutting-edge technology to optimize patient care. Jackie leads orientation and professional development initiatives, ensuring that both new and experienced nurses receive continuous education tailored to the evolving needs of rehabilitation patients.

She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to design and implement innovative training programs that integrate scientific research, technology, and best practices into daily nursing care. She also plays a pivotal role in developing standardized protocols and competency assessments, ensuring quality, safety, and excellence in practice.

Jackie’s passion for education and evidence-based practice is transformative for JRI. She proactively identifies gaps in knowledge and practice, then develops targeted solutions through training, mentorship, and the introduction of new technology.

Innovations & Contributions:

• Tracheostomy Education & Boot Camp: Jackie revolutionized tracheostomy education by developing a structured training program for nurses and physicians, ensuring competency in suctioning, trach care, and emergency response. Her expertise is instrumental during the annual 3-day “Trach Boot Camp” for new Rehabilitation Resident physicians.

• Safe Patient Handling & Over-Bed Lifts: A passionate advocate for patient and staff safety, Jackie has championed the use of over-bed lifts for spinal cord injuries, significantly improving safe patient handling practices.

• Simulation-Based Training: Jackie has effectively integrated simulation training mannequins into competency assessments and staff education, ensuring team members develop critical skills in a controlled, realistic environment.

• Bedside Handoff Simulation Labs: She has been instrumental in establishing bedside handoff simulation labs, reinforcing best practices for seamless communication and patient-centered care.
