Isabella’s actions went far beyond clinical duties; they reflected a rare and remarkable level of humanity.
I am honored to recognize Isabella for her extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and unwavering advocacy for patient dignity and safety. During a recent admission to 14 East, L.C., a transgender woman undergoing treatment for anal cancer, experienced a profoundly distressing incident. A roommate and the roommate’s visitor directed discriminatory remarks at L.C., loudly misgendering her and creating a hostile environment. L.C. became visibly upset and distressed.
Isabella responded with exceptional poise and empathy. She immediately engaged with L.C. in a calm and supportive manner, taking time to listen closely, validate her feelings, and reassure her that she was safe and respected. Isabella demonstrated not only clinical excellence but also a deep understanding of the emotional and psychological needs of patients who are often marginalized in healthcare settings. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Isabella escalated the incident to nursing leadership without hesitation, ensuring that appropriate steps were taken to uphold our institution’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and patient-centered care. Thanks to her swift action, L.C. was promptly moved to another room and, most importantly, felt protected, heard, and affirmed.
Isabella’s response exemplifies the core values of nursing: compassion, respect, advocacy, and a commitment to healing the whole person. Her grace under pressure and dedication to creating a safe and affirming care environment made a lasting difference in this patient’s experience. L.C. later shared that she felt truly supported and that Isabella’s care helped restore her sense of trust and safety. Isabella’s actions went far beyond clinical duties; they reflected a rare and remarkable level of humanity. She is a shining example of what it means to be a DAISY nurse.
