I appreciated her candor, calm, and old-school "this is what happened" explanation.
During my second day of admission, my previous IV placed in the ER had unfortunately infiltrated that morning because the initial IV was put in with ultrasound by the ED MD, my nurse placed several pages to the VAT team. Several hours had passed, and my pain was continuing to increase. Around 1400, Ida came in and asked me if I would mind if she tried. I responded, Please do. Well, long story short, Ida was able to get a 22-gauge PIV in my hand, which we used until the VAT was able to put a midline in around 1700. As a nurse myself for 22 years at the bedside, it's awesome to see a nurse leader actually helping with bedside nursing.
I nominate Ida for the DAISY Award for the exceptional care she gave me. Three times she went beyond the normal duties of her position. First is when she had the difficult task of telling me that my scheduled kidney biopsy was being delayed a day. She was aware of the urgency and importance of the procedure for my diagnosis. I appreciated her candor, calm, and old-school "this is what happened" explanation.
The next two times were the day after my release. There was a glitch in the process of my prescriptions being filled. After calls and visits to the pharmacy, doctor's office, and hospital, she overheard the problem. She tracked down the releasing physician and got a written prescription that I could use so my pharmacy could fill it. When taking the prescription to the pharmacy, the pharmacist needed the DEA#. We went back to the hospital, and she got the number for us. I was able to purchase my chemo medication.
I would like her to be recognized for her dedication to her patients and her expertise in policies and procedures. She is a lifesaver and angel to me.
