I would like to recognize Hazelyn Hunter, from Lakeview College of Nursing, as a deserving recipient of the DAISY Award for outstanding student.
I would like to thank Hazelyn and share my story of why she is so special. Hazelyn is a truly special person because of her selflessness, empathy, and dedication to others. She goes out of her way to support her classmates by sharing study resources, explaining difficult concepts, and offering constant encouragement. In clinical settings, her kindness shines through in how she treats her patients with compassion, patience, and clear communication that puts them at ease. She leads with her heart and lifts up everyone around her, making her not just a great student, but a future nurse who will truly make a difference.
Here is a specific example of how this individual has shown above-and-beyond care and compassion: During our mental health rotation, Hazelyn sat with a young child who was struggling with anger and emotional outbursts. She listened patiently as the child shared their feeling, validating their emotions without judgment. Then, with warmth and calm, she taught the child simple coping techniques, like using words to express feelings. Her ability to connect and empower the child in that moment showed true compassion.
