Gina didn't stop at the bedside. She contacted case management, secured clothing, food, and basic essentials, some provided through the foundation, and some personally from her.
Gina exemplifies the core values of Ochsner in every aspect of her work.

Teamwork: When new patients are admitted to the unit, Gina is one of the first to step in. She assists with admissions efficiently, ensuring a smooth and comfortable transition for the patient. Her presence not only enhances the patient experience but also helps expedite care and reduce delays.

Integrity: Gina consistently does the right thing, even when no one is watching. If she's unsure of something, she seeks the correct answer. When a mistake occurs, she owns it, addresses it appropriately, and lifts others up in the process. Her work ethic is grounded in honesty and personal accountability.

Inclusivity: Gina radiates warmth and positivity, making everyone, patients, colleagues, and visitors feel welcomed and supported. She fosters a culture where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Compassion: This is where Gina truly shines. Her compassionate care often happens quietly, behind the scenes, but it makes a profound impact. She not only ensures her patients' physical needs are met, cleaning rooms, providing comfort, and educating them, but she also prioritizes dignity and emotional support. Her ability to connect on a human level is extraordinary. This brings me to why I am nominating Gina for the DAISY Award.

Gina listens with empathy. She builds trusting relationships with her patients, creating a safe space that allows healing to begin. I've witnessed her dedication firsthand, but one moment stands out; a moment that deeply moved me. A patient was admitted with an altered mental status, a history of alcoholism, and homelessness. Gina was assigned to his care. Despite the challenges, she never complained. She treated him with the same compassion and respect she gives every patient. By the third shift, the patient began regaining his cognition, and a bond began to form. Gina bathed him, trimmed his nails, shaved his beard, and washed the asphalt from his face. During this care, they talked and they cried. Gina asked about his experience being homeless. He said it was scary. She asked where he found food; he replied, "Wherever I can, sometimes there's nothing left in the garbage." When she asked what he did when it rained or got cold, he tearfully said, "I freeze." Gina composed herself, continued her care, and gently asked about his past. His face lit up as he spoke of being a veteran, receiving an honorable discharge, opening a successful family restaurant, and playing guitar in the French Quarter. He even said he could string a guitar like Stevie Ray Vaughan.

After nearly two hours of care, the transformation in him, both physically and emotionally, was remarkable. Gina didn't stop at the bedside. She contacted case management, secured clothing, food, and basic essentials, some provided through the foundation, and some personally from her. When her shift ended, their goodbye was filled with tears and gratitude. This is just one example of Gina's compassion in action. Her clinical skills, integrity, and commitment to patient advocacy make her an outstanding candidate for the DAISY Award.
