Leadership in nursing is more than just management; it involves dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to patient care. Emily Taylor exemplifies these qualities, making her a deserving candidate for the Nurse Leader of the Year award.
Emily is always ready to step in and assist on the unit, regardless of the time of day or the week's demands. She never questions staying late or coming in on a day off if it means what is best for the patients. Her steady presence ensures smooth operations, enabling the team to provide patients with the highest quality of care. In addition to her daily responsibilities, she plays a crucial role in maintaining unit operations by managing schedules, working with the manager and charge nurses to ensure appropriate staffing, and leading unit-based meetings and initiatives.
Somehow, she can always work magic to ensure our patients are cared for by getting additional staff when needed. Her leadership fosters teamwork and a culture of continuous improvement, which aligns with the principles of the "YOU MATTER" framework. She celebrates the team's successes, provides support during challenging times, and readily steps in whenever needed. Patient safety is one of her top priorities. She carefully reviews safety reports, addresses concerns, and maintains the highest standards of nursing practice. Her commitment to maintaining a just culture ensures that both patients and staff feel supported and empowered. She also strongly advocates for shared decision-making, actively participating in unit-based councils and interdisciplinary collaborations like the PICU CUSP team, the CICU CUSP team, the unplanned extubation committee, and others to enhance patient care.
Oftentimes, being a nursing leader is a thankless job. Hopefully, these few words can help this nurse understand how much of a positive impact she has made not only on each of the patients in the unit but also on the staff and her colleagues. She leads with heart, integrity, and a deep commitment to her team, patients, and the organization.
