She exemplifies the heart of a nurse—demonstrating a therapeutic presence, active listening, patient-centered education, and a willingness to advocate for her patients, no matter how big or small their needs may be.
Throughout her clinical experiences, Brooke has consistently demonstrated exceptional compassion, therapeutic communication, and a deep commitment to holistic patient care. During her clinical rotation in NURS 4106 at the Mayo Clinic DEU in Red Wing, Brooke made a profound impact during her one-day Emergency Department (ED) rotation. She was recognized by her assigned preceptor for the extraordinary care and connection she established with a patient and their family during a sudden and serious health crisis. Her ability to offer support, reassurance, and clear communication in such a high-stress situation was so impressive that the preceptor immediately brought it to the attention of the Mayo Educator coordinating student clinical experiences. The educator then reached out to me as her clinical instructor to share this recognition. When I asked Brooke about it, she humbly responded that she was just doing what she believed was natural. My response? "I think you did something truly special!"
Brooke's compassionate nature extends beyond direct patient care into every aspect of her nursing education. During a recent code simulation, Brooke stood out by remaining focused on the patient, offering words of encouragement, and providing a sense of calm, even though the scenario involved an unresponsive client. Her ability to infuse healing energy into the space not only benefited the simulated patient but also supported the emotional well-being of her peers, creating a more holistic and supportive learning environment.
Though I have not had the opportunity to observe Brooke in direct patient care, I have witnessed her incredible growth over the years in our simulation labs. She exemplifies the heart of a nurse—demonstrating a therapeutic presence, active listening, patient-centered education, and a willingness to advocate for her patients, no matter how big or small their needs may be.
A standout example of Brooke’s dedication was during our trauma simulation, where she took on the critical role of Airway RN. Amidst the pressure of the scenario, Brooke expertly prioritized and executed essential airway management tasks—assessing the patient’s level of consciousness, Glasgow Coma Scale, and pupil size, and selecting appropriate oxygenation interventions. However, what truly set her apart was that she never lost sight of the human being in front of her. She continuously provided clear explanations and compassionate reassurance, ensuring that her patient felt seen, heard, and cared for, even in a high-intensity moment.
This is just one of the many moments that showcase Brooke’s extraordinary ability to blend clinical excellence with deeply compassionate nursing care.
