This student’s genuine compassion helped the client maintain dignity and self-worth through her recovery.
During her very first clinical rotation in nursing school, this student demonstrated the essence of what it means to be a DAISY Nurse. She was assigned to a client in long-term care who had suffered a stroke resulting in left-sided weakness. The student went above and beyond to not only meet her client’s physical needs but also to support her emotionally.
The client took pride in dressing up and attending physical therapy each day, working hard to regain her independence. This student honored this drive by providing thoughtful assistance only when needed while empowering the client to do as much as she could on her own by providing constant encouragement and motivation. This student’s genuine compassion helped the client maintain dignity and self-worth through her recovery.
The student formed a deep and meaningful connection with the client. The student’s presence brought visible joy to the client, who affectionately referred to the student as “her girl, her nurse.” It was clear that the student’s support extended far beyond tasks and treatments. She was truly creating a holistic healing environment for the client. While knowledge and skill are critical, it is love, connection, and compassionate care that truly define excellence in nursing. The student’s actions captured the heart of nursing.
