Ang consistently goes above and beyond, creating a supportive environment where nurses feel empowered, and patients receive the highest standard of care.
I am writing on behalf of the physician and APP leadership team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Emergency Department to wholeheartedly recognize Angalene Henry with the 2025 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Leaders. Ang’s exceptional leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both her team and her patients make her incredibly deserving of this honor.
Ang is someone I admire deeply – she cares so deeply for those around her and is driven by a genuine desire to serve others. She treats everyone with the same deep level of care and respect and shows up fully for everyone around her. I can still remember working alongside her when she was a bedside nurse, and I was training as a resident physician – she cared for each patient with such dignity and humanity – both caring for the patient in front of her and shaping the resident physician beside her.
Now, as the Nurse Manager in the Emergency Department, Ang brings that same desire to serve and care for others to her leadership role. Her deep dedication to her staff and her patients shines through in everything she does. Ang is always professional, always kind, and always engaged. She is the most dedicated, professional, trustworthy, and collaborative leader.
Ang consistently goes above and beyond, creating a supportive environment where nurses feel empowered, and patients receive the highest standard of care. Her ability to lead with empathy, actively listen, and respond thoughtfully has fostered a culture of trust, collaboration, and excellence in our unit. Whether she’s mentoring new staff, navigating complex patient care situations, or advocating for resources that improve outcomes, she does so with grace, professionalism, and a deep sense of purpose.
She is an empathetic listener, and staff feel comfortable sharing challenging situations with her. There is no problem too big or too small for her to help solve. She has a natural ability to make people feel heard and valued and goes out of her way to do whatever needs to be done to care for patients and staff, setting the tone for the rest of the team. She is always collaborative, deeply thoughtful, and innovative in her approach to problem-solving. The sense of teamwork, comradery and shared mission she creates is palpable. Ang is truly the definition of a servant leader.
As a leader, Ang models interprofessional collaboration and works to create an inclusive environment where all members of the team feel valued and appreciated. She always advocates for the nurses on the frontlines of care, but is still very open-minded about optimizing workflows and exploring creative solutions. She approaches every issue with a sense of urgency, yet never rushes to judgment. When you approach her with an issue, she listens well and asks questions to better understand and help determine a resolution. She takes the time to fully understand the viewpoints of everyone involved, ensuring that all voices are heard before offering solutions, while always advocating for nurses and patients. This thoughtful, empathetic approach not only fosters collaboration but also results in outcomes that truly benefit both the team and our patients.
She is the first person to highlight and celebrate other people’s successes – whether big or small – and to build up those around her. She listens before she speaks, but is not afraid to ask hard questions and to hold people accountable. By role-modeling teamwork, collaboration, and inclusivity, Ang promotes a culture of excellence at Penn Medicine. She truly embodies the spirit of this award and is an inspiration to all who work with her.
