She took the burden off of us and let us focus on our son's healing.
My three-year-old son was diagnosed with Wilms' Tumor in December 2024. Once we had finished surgery and inpatient treatment, we were referred to the AFLAC clinic to start outpatient chemotherapy treatment. Abigail was our very first, and she made our visit much more comforting with all the transparency and information she provided during our long journey ahead. My son connected so well with her and was comfortable around her, which we couldn't say about everyone, because he had just gone through major surgery and was scared to be at the hospital.
Several weeks went by, and chemo was going well until one week, when my son developed a fever 24 hours after receiving a medication. We ended up getting admitted due to his ANC being extremely low. Two more weeks went by, and the same fever kept happening. Abigail gave us a call as we were on our way to the ER with our son. She said, "I am wondering if he is having an adverse reaction to the medication. I am going to look into this." This conversation opened the door for me to do my research. Come to find out, the medication he was taking for chemo caused fevers within his specific diagnosis. The recommendation was to give Tylenol before treatment and 12-24 hours after treatment. My goal was to go next week and present this article to the treatment team to implement Tylenol into his care plan.
As we got to the clinic, I had the medical article printed, and Abigail came to get us from the waiting room and told me that she had found the same article a week prior when we had our initial conversation. She had already talked to his treatment team, and Tylenol was already on his treatment plan. I had felt so much relief and realized she went the extra mile to make sure my son was getting the right treatment plan set in place for him to feel the absolute best. She took the burden off of us and let us focus on our son's healing. She is always so positive with her patients, and I can really see her true passion for working with kids. She absolutely deserves the DAAISY Award for her amazing nursing and for going the extra mile. We appreciate her so much.
