They created a moment that brought immeasurable peace and comfort during one of the hardest times of our lives.
My father-in-law was admitted to the 2nd floor. During that same time, my mother-in-law was admitted to a different floor after suffering a broken femur. My father-in-law was rapidly declining and transitioning to hospice care.
In his final days, there was one thing he wanted more than anything else in the world—to see his wife. He spoke about her constantly, prayed for her, and longed to simply be near her one more time.
Lillian Montero, RN, was his nurse, and Kim Winders, RN, was the charge nurse caring for him during this difficult time. What these two nurses did for our family was nothing short of extraordinary. With incredible compassion, kindness, and determination, they worked to transfer my mother-in-law to the 2nd floor so she could be close to him. They went even further by arranging for them to spend precious time together in the same room.
Watching the two of them see each other again was one of the most beautiful and emotional moments our family has ever experienced. The smiles on their faces, the peace in their eyes, and the joy they shared in that room are memories we will carry with us forever. After so much illness, pain, and uncertainty, Kim and Lillian gave them a moment of comfort, dignity, love, and togetherness when they needed it most.
That visit became their final goodbye. My father-in-law passed away shortly after being discharged home on hospice, and my mother-in-law was not able to see him again.
There are truly no words that fully express what Kim and Lillian’s kindness meant to our family. They did far more than provide medical care—they cared for this couple as human beings, as soul mates, and as a family. They created a moment that brought immeasurable peace and comfort during one of the hardest times of our lives.
Kim Winders, RN, and Lillian Montero, RN, deserve more than a nomination; they deserve the DAISY Award for the extraordinary compassion and humanity they showed our family. What they did required additional time, effort, coordination, and emotional investment, yet they chose to do it anyway because they cared.
Our family will never forget their kindness. Because of them, a couple was able to share one last moment together, and that gift is something we will treasure forever.
