Kathlene preserved my dignity in ways I can never thank her enough.
I was admitted to your unit through the Emergency Room. I was in extreme pain and anticipating back surgery. On the 12th, I had that procedure (a microdiscectomy) complicated by the discovery of a chipped and fractured vertebra and fusion repair. I have been a nurse for over 35 years; I was worried going in and terrified waking up. During my care on 6 South, I had an incredible nurse.
The complete, compassionate care she delivered to my roommate and me was noteworthy.
Several nights on 6 South, Kathlene Barasi, RN, cared for me. Kathlene was amazing. I had a difficult surgery, a difficult transition from anesthesia, and a lot of pain. I came out of anesthesia not knowing where I was or what happened to me. I was terrified. Upon reaching the floor at almost midnight, Kathlene was my light. I remember asking her to keep me medicated, as I had not slept in weeks previous to the procedure. She did just that and more. Kathlene took care of me completely. She made me comfortable- ice bags, repositioning, blankets, reassurance, and assistance with toileting. She treated me with respect and care. I am a 'seasoned' nurse. I don't like being a patient. Kathlene preserved my dignity in ways I can never thank her enough. Kathlene had an acute awareness of her patient. On the second night (24-hours post op), my blood pressure was low, and I was not doing well. Kathlene immediately assessed me and stayed in touch with the team. She made me aware of her concerns but never made me feel scared that she was not on top of the situation. I honestly feel that if it were not for Kathlene, I may have spent additional time in the hospital. Kathlene's kindness and respect mean more than many can imagine.
She was appropriate in her care and conversation, and did what was required (identifying herself, checking bracelets, scoring pain, making me as comfortable as I could be, and changing or adjusting linens/pillows/ice). That should be the minimal expectation. Kathlene far exceeded the minimum, and I wanted you to know how fortunate you are to have her on your staff. I will always speak well of the care and respect I received.
