Due to Lauren's perseverance, the patient (an infant) is still alive.
Lauren Beury recently advocated for a pediatric patient's care to be escalated due to his quick decline. The patient was in need of fluid resuscitation; he was bradycardic and was quickly becoming more lethargic. Multiple staff members attempted to obtain PIV access on this patient, including one of the most senior ultrasound-trained ED techs, with no success.

Lauren communicated her concerns to the MD resident, charge nurse, and other ED RNs. She asked the resident whether she could obtain emergency IO access and start fluids, and was told to wait until the resident consulted with the CHKD ED Pediatrician. Lauren then escalated her concerns to the ED Attending, who went to the patient's bedside, assessed him, and agreed with Lauren. The ED attending then obtained IO access, and the patient was expeditiously transferred to CHKD ED, where he was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition that required a surgical procedure and continued critical care treatment.

Due to Lauren's perseverance, the patient (an infant) is still alive. She has continued to advocate for this patient, reporting her concerns about parental neglect and a delay in seeking medical treatment to Child Protective Services. Lauren will always go above and beyond for her patients and their care. Lauren stayed calm in a stressful situation and never lost her composure when relaying her concerns to ED providers. I am so thankful to have Lauren and her unwavering tenacity on our team at SVBGH ED.
