She handled the situation with such professionalism and kindness, and it was clear she was advocating for everyone’s comfort.
Our 84-year-old father was referred to hospice. At that time, we were all scared, nervous, and shocked. We knew this moment would come someday, but the speed at which everything happened caught us by surprise.
From the moment we arrived, Dad was shown the utmost care and respect by everyone. We met Diann that day, and from the moment she walked in, we knew Dad was in great hands. She took the time to answer all of our questions and made sure Dad was comfortable, even taking the time to learn something as personal as his favorite ice cream.
The next day, friends and family came to visit Dad, and things became a little loud. Diann approached me and gently explained that we were disturbing some of the other patients. She handled the situation with such professionalism and kindness, and it was clear she was advocating for everyone’s comfort.
Later, while walking some visitors to the elevators, they commented on the incredible care Dad was receiving. They were just as impressed as we were. Two of them even said that if they ever needed hospice care, they would choose BVH.
After that, I continued helping visitors leave, but honestly, I was struggling. I was trying to stay strong for Dad and my family, and apparently it showed. There was Diann, walking up to me and asking if I needed anything. Of course, I said no, but her response was something I will never forget. She simply said, “How about a hug?”
All I could say was, “Yes, please.”
My son was reading over my shoulder as I wrote this and said, “You’re writing about that one nurse, aren’t you?” Even the younger generation recognizes an exceptional nurse when they see one.
