I strive to become the kind of nurse that Thomas Pennell is: clinically skilled, deeply compassionate, and unwaveringly present for both patients and their families.
My father was admitted to the cardiac ICU on the night shift with a severe hemorrhagic stroke secondary to a myocardial infarction. From the moment Thomas Pennell became his nurse, he provided not only excellent clinical care but also a level of emotional support that profoundly impacted my family and me.

As a nursing student, I often find comfort in understanding the why behind patient care. Thomas recognized that in me immediately. He took the time to explain my father's condition in a way that was clear, honest, and compassionate: never overwhelming, but never minimizing the seriousness of the situation. He struck a balance that I didnt even know was possible: helping me understand the gravity of my fathers condition while still protecting me as a daughter in that moment.

That first night in the hospital was filled with fear, uncertainty, and heartbreak. Thomas became more than just my father's nurse: he became a steady, reassuring presence for our entire family. He treated my father with dignity and kindness, and he treated us as if we mattered just as much. Before I went downstairs to try to get some rest, I asked if someone could let me know before the shift change. I expected a quick update at best, but Thomas went far beyond that. He took time out of his already demanding shift to come find me personally before he left. He updated me thoroughly on my father's status, but more importantly, he asked me how I was doing. He sat with me, listened, and simply showed up in a way that I will never forget.

In a moment where everything felt out of control, Thomas gave me something to hold on to: compassion, presence, and genuine human connection. Although my father's outcome was not what we had hoped for, I will always be deeply grateful for the care he received and for the way Thomas cared for us as a family. His actions reminded me why I chose nursing in the first place. I strive to become the kind of nurse that Thomas Pennell is: clinically skilled, deeply compassionate, and unwaveringly present for both patients and their families. It is nurses like him who make an immeasurable difference, even in the hardest moments. For going above and beyond in every sense of the word, for treating my father with dignity, and for supporting our family with such genuine care, I wholeheartedly commend Thomas Pennell.
