I am a 63-year-old patient who received a double lung transplant at Tampa General Hospital. My recovery was extremely complex. I experienced numerous complications and setbacks, spent 26 days in the ICU, and was eventually transferred.
Throughout my stay, I received excellent care from many dedicated professionals, but one nurse stood out above all others: Ty Schrader. From the moment Ty walked into my room, he brought a sense of calm, confidence, and genuine positivity that I desperately needed. I was overwhelmed, frightened, and unsure if I would ever regain my strength. Ty had a way of encouraging me that was never forced, never patronizing, and never “too much.” His support felt natural, sincere, and grounded in real belief in my ability to recover.
One moment that will stay with me forever was during my early sit-to-stand exercises. I was exhausted, discouraged, and doubting myself. Ty looked at me and said, “That was 100% you.” Those four words changed everything. They reminded me that I was still capable, still fighting, and still moving forward even when I couldn’t see it myself. That simple affirmation became a turning point in my recovery.
Ty consistently went beyond the clinical tasks of nursing. He anticipated my needs before I voiced them. He explained every step of my care in a way I could understand. He treated me with dignity on my hardest days and celebrated every small victory with me. During moments when I was stressed or worried, he provided reassurance that felt like it came from a friend, not just a nurse.
