We have never witnessed such kindness, gentleness, and genuine compassion from a medical professional in all of our hospital experiences.
Our 77-year-old father was transferred from Christus Hospital in New Braunfels to the ICU at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas for specialized G.I. care. This is when we first met his nurse, Holly C., in the Medical ICU on the third floor. Dad’s condition was dire and incredibly complex due to his uniquely modified anatomy from a gastric bypass surgery years ago. From the moment he arrived, the medical teams were working urgently to understand what was happening and to ease his pain.
Because of the complexity of his case, we found ourselves interacting with multiple teams — G.I., surgical, primary, and general care. As Dad began to decline, the sheer number of specialists involved became overwhelming for our family. We were scared, exhausted, and struggling to keep up with the constant flow of information and decisions.
Holly recognized this immediately. At one point, when our dad was rapidly declining and our stress was at its peak, Holly saw how overwhelmed we were. She took it upon herself — entirely on her own initiative — to bring all the teams involved into a single, unified meeting with our family. G.I., surgical, primary, and general care all came together because Holly made it happen. It was the defining moment of our father’s care. For the first time, we were able to ask every question, understand every option, and get the clarity we needed. That meeting ultimately determined whether Dad’s suffering would continue or whether his care would transition to comfort care and hospice. Holly understood what was happening on all sides, and because of her advocacy, our father’s pain finally came to an end. She helped guide us — and him — toward peace.
One of the brightest parts of each day was arriving at the hospital in the morning and seeing Holly’s warm, caring smile greeting us. In the middle of fear and heartbreak, she brought comfort simply by being there. She cared for our father as if he were her own dad, and he felt that love. Even in his suffering, he would smile when she leaned in to ask if he was okay or if she could do anything for him. We have never witnessed such kindness, gentleness, and genuine compassion from a medical professional in all of our hospital experiences.
We also had a complicated family dynamic, and Holly navigated it with remarkable grace and empathy. She treated every family member with respect, patience, and kindness — even in moments when emotions were high. She listened without judgment, validated our concerns, and created a sense of calm in a situation that felt anything but calm. From day one, Holly didn’t just care for our family; she became a part of it.
On her last day with us, Holly’s connection to our family was undeniable. She cried with us, hugged each of us, and held us the way family members hold one another during heartbreak. That moment will stay with us forever. Holly will never be forgotten.
Our dad went peacefully to Heaven after having what we can only describe as an angel in Holly C., caring for him right up to the end. Her compassion, her advocacy, and her unwavering love helped ensure that his final moments were filled with dignity, comfort, and peace.
Not only does Holly exemplify the very essence of the DAISY Award, but we believe future nursing students would benefit greatly from her knowledge, compassion, and the extraordinary standard of care she embodies. She is the kind of nurse who elevates everyone around her.
We love you, Holly C., and you will live in our hearts forever!
