I am nominating Chad Boyer for the extraordinary care and advocacy he provided for my 13-year-old son.
On my son's first night in the hospital, Chad sensed that something was not right. Even when initial impressions suggested a less urgent diagnosis, he trusted his clinical judgment - what he called his "spidey senses“ - and stood up to the resident physician to advocate for further evaluation.
As a parent, I watched him remain calm but firm. He did not dismiss our concerns. He did not defer when his instincts told him something more serious was happening. He pushed for additional intervention, and because of his persistence, my son received emergency surgery before it was too late.
Chad stayed after his shift to prep him and see him off to surgery and continued to come back and check on him daily. He even picked up an extra shift to care for him post-surgery.
We later learned that my son had a perforated Meckels diverticulum and a contaminated appendix. Without timely surgical intervention, the outcome would have looked very different as I write this letter.
Chad demonstrated courage, critical thinking, and an unwavering commitment to patient safety. He was willing to challenge the status quo to protect my son. That kind of advocacy cannot be taught - it reflects character.
As a mother, I will never forget that Chad stood up for my son when it mattered most. He quite literally helped save his life. We are profoundly grateful.
