As a role model, he exhibits an extraordinary behavior that fosters trust, compassion, and mutual respect.
I take pleasure in nominating Martin Espina for the Nurse Leader Award. Martin Joined GSH in 2001 as a staff nurse where he excelled in his clinical path as an OR nurse. Three years later he was chosen as the Specialty Coordinator for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine; a role that he held for 5 years. Through his exemplary clinical practice acknowledged by Perioperative Leadership and Physician leaders he was promoted to a supervisory role in the old Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). That role was sustained until the new ASC was built and opened for Operation. Moving up the career ladder, he became the Manager in 2018. Martin has demonstrated a great deal of resilience in his diverse roles along the last 24 years. He is well liked and respected by his staff. His longevity with now PIHGSH is a hallmark of his full commitment to the population he serves both within the community in and outside the hospital. As a role model, he exhibits an extraordinary behavior that fosters trust, compassion, and mutual respect. When asked what has motivated him to remain at GSH, he humbly responds, “I just do the best that I know how” and “never see myself above any roles played within our services”. His staff refer to him as “easy to work with”. He is considered the best resource in Perioperative Services both historically and clinically. He has witnessed multiple challenges along his long career, and the experiences have contributed to his solid resilience and his sense of high tolerance. Among his many attributes, he is self -taught the science of statistical reporting with the presentation of analysis at medical staff sessions. Martin is married and has two daughters.
