November 4th, 2025, is a day the Louisville community will never forget.

A UPS plane bound for Hawaii crashed shortly after takeoff, resulting in the tragic loss of 15 lives. As news of the disaster broke, the nurses of the 6E Burn Unit immediately began preparing for a scenario unlike anything they had previously encountered.

Those off duty volunteered to come in, and those already on shift offered to stay. The unit moved with remarkable speed, coordination, and purpose. What unfolded next was a profound example of compassion, professionalism, and unwavering teamwork.

The day shift team quickly gathered supplies and readied the unit for incoming patients. Several night shift nurses came in on their day off, without being asked, to ensure the team had the support needed for the anticipated surge of complex traumatic burn injuries.

As the first patients arrived, every nurse stepped forward to help with any task required. While continuing to care for their routine burn patients, the team simultaneously managed multiple critically injured crash victims with exceptional skill and composure.

Beyond clinical excellence, the Burn Unit became a source of emotional strength for devastated families. Nurses assisted with patient identification, communicated with anxious loved ones, and provided guidance during heartbreaking end-of-life decisions. They offered comfort, presence, and dignity during the darkest of moments.

One grieving family was so deeply moved by the team's compassion that they requested donations to the Burn Unit, despite enduring the unimaginable loss of their son, brother, partner, and father.

While the events of November 4th highlighted the team's extraordinary capabilities, this level of dedication was not an exception to who they are every single day. Their work in the seven weeks following the crash demonstrated sustained resilience, unity, and commitment to trauma-informed, patient-centered care.

Their excellence is not confined to crisis.

During routine rounding, the same outstanding teamwork, compassion, and clinical expertise that families and patients consistently praise was witnessed. Every patient encountered expressed profound gratitude for the care they received.

One visiting patient shared that his experience was so exceptional he was considering moving to Louisville because of the compassion shown by this team. It happened to be his birthday, and his nurse arranged a cake. The entire team gathered to sing "Happy Birthday," bringing him to tears.

Another patient admitted, arriving with deep fear due to past healthcare experiences, said that the kindness, patience, and skill of the Burn Unit team made them feel safe for the first time in a hospital setting.

These stories reflect what is seen every day on 6E.

The Burn Unit demonstrates what true collaboration looks like: nurses, technicians, therapists, and support staff working seamlessly to deliver exceptional, trauma-informed, emotionally attuned care to some of our most vulnerable patients.

Their compassion is not performative; it is deeply rooted in who they are as clinicians and as human beings.

The purpose of the Team DAISY Award is to honor teams that exemplify extraordinary care and outstanding teamwork. The 6E Burn Unit embodies this standard every single day.

Their actions on November 4th, and every day before and after, represent the highest level of nursing excellence, humanity, and dedication to patient care. They truly deserve this recognition.
