His excellent nursing knowledge, outstanding bedside manner, and genuine character brought comfort and a smile to my mom’s face after a night of pain and tears.
Matthew B. provided exceptional care to my mom, a Stage IV pancreatic cancer patient, at the UC San Di go Health La Jolla Emergency Department.
My mom had endured a very painful and difficult night prior, and from the moment Matthew walked into the room that morning, his compassion and positive energy made an immediate difference. His genuine care brought a smile to my mom’s face when she truly needed it most.
Matthew went above and beyond in so many ways. He made sure she had the snacks she wanted when her mouth tasted unpleasant, changed her complex wound with confidence and ease, and noticed that her IR drain needed to be flushed following an important procedure. He encouraged her to walk throughout the day so she wouldn’t remain in bed, always keeping her comfort and well-being in mind.
What stood out most was how special he made my mom feel. Even when other wonderful nurses were helping us while he was on break, she kept asking when Matthew would be back. He also stayed in the room when her doctor visited to ensure he fully understood my mom’s concerns and needs, and that she felt supported and heard.
Later that morning, my mom’s blood sugar levels rose - something completely new for her. Matthew took the time to explain the symptoms, possible causes, and the care plan in a way that was reassuring and easy to understand. He ensured her blood sugar was checked every six hours and clearly explained the insulin dosage that was ordered and why it was necessary.
You could truly see how much Matthew enjoys his work and how deeply he cares for his patients. His excellent nursing knowledge, outstanding bedside manner, and genuine character brought comfort and a smile to my mom’s face after a night of pain and tears. He even learned a few Russian words to help communicate with her and made sure she fully understood everything being discussed — a gesture that meant so much to our family.
We are incredibly grateful for Matthew’s big heart and the outstanding care he provided to our mom. He made a lasting impact during a very difficult time, and we truly appreciate everything he did.
