I genuinely felt safe with Joana.
Joana was nominated 3 times: by a clinical instructor, a patient, and a family member.

Joana Philips advocates for thorough care for each of her patients, each shift. She is clear that a complete and accurate assessment will lead to better care and outcomes for patients, and lead to exceptional continuity of care. Her care and compassion for each patient extends to her patients’ families as she keeps them updated on what she is doing and why. She introduces herself to each person in the room, personalizing each patient’s healthcare.

Students in my clinical group experienced her caring methods in the Fall of 2025 on 1 Hussey. Joana deliberately mentors nursing students as she cares for her patients. She asked students to complete a physical assessment of their patients and verbally report their findings to her. She then had them read the previous shift's nurses’ notes and review their change-of-shift report notes. Joana discussed any discrepancies with the students, what they may mean, and why they must be followed up.

I saw personally that patients in Joana’s care each week were getting the specific and organized care that they needed. When she does not work the day before, Joana is at the computer early in her shift, finding out which patients of hers have safety needs, a birthday, a medication that she is unfamiliar with, and more! Joana shows compassion behind the scenes and provides her patients and student nurses with extraordinary care.

Joana is the epitome of the perfect nurse: she is professional, knowledgeable, personable, even-tempered, hardworking, conscientious, competent, compassionate, empathetic, and always available. Joana also takes the time to not only deliver information but also to listen to the concerns of her patients.

As a recent patient at Newton Medical Center, I was very fortunate to have Joana as my nurse. She made me feel like I was her only patient. She would often come into my room just to see if I was okay and to ask if I needed anything. For example, at one point during my stay, I had such strong feelings of anxiety that I was so confused, annoyed, and cranky, mainly because I could not understand what the hospitalist was telling me about my condition. Joana patiently and calmly gave me a viable response and assuaged my fears. I genuinely felt safe with Joana. Joana’s characteristics portray the true ethical standards of the nursing profession.

My 80-year-old father has metastasized prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, as well as cardiac amyloidosis. We brought him to the hospital and learned he had an infection that spread to his bloodstream. During his stay, we had the pleasure of having Joana as our nurse for two days. She was so attentive and took the time to explain everything to my dad and really listened to him when he spoke. She treated him with compassion and respect, never rushed him, and allowed us to ask questions. Considering it was a stressful situation, she helped bring calm to the situation and helped make my dad feel at ease.
