He arranged for his personal barber to come to the hospital to remove dreads and trim the hair of a long-term trauma patient.
A patient had been hospitalized for over 3 months on BH51. It had taken a great deal of work by the BH51 staff to build rapport and trust. As you can imagine, being hospitalized for that length of time can take a toll. You lose control of your life and everyday activities. The things you and I take for granted, such as having our hair cut, go by the wayside. The team on BH51 works hard to give our long-term trauma patients a sense of normalcy by giving them activities and arranging specialty care for them. Even using their own time and money to provide extras to their patients.
One example of this is Nurse Ruben. He arranged for his personal barber to come to the hospital to remove dreads and trim the hair of a long-term trauma patient. This provided the patient a few minutes of normalcy in a life that had been turned upside down. Ruben's caring behavior did not go unnoticed by our trauma team or the patient. This is but a small example of the tremendous care the BH51 staff and nurses, like this, provide to our patients and their families.
