This small act showed us that he cared not only about my father’s medical condition, but also about our whole family’s well-being.
When my father was admitted with a severe urinary tract infection in his bladder, he became very confused, and our whole family was frightened and unsure of what would happen next. Dat immediately stood out because he was always at my dad’s bedside, carefully monitoring his vital signs, giving his medications on time, and explaining what he was doing in simple words that my mom and I could understand.
Dat never treated my father like just another patient. He spoke gently to him even when my dad was confused, reassuring him and calling him by name, which helped calm him down. He made sure my dad was comfortable, adjusting his position, checking his pain, and responding quickly whenever the alarms went off. Dat also took time to update our family, answering our questions with patience and respect, even when we asked the same thing more than once because we were so worried.
One moment that meant the most to us was when Dat noticed how overwhelmed my mother was. My parents live together and depend on each other, and my mom was scared about how she would manage his care after the hospital. Dat did not ignore this; instead, he asked the case manager to come speak with my mom so we could get extra support and resources for when my dad goes home. This small act showed us that he cared not only about my father’s medical condition, but also about our whole family’s well-being.
Because of Dat’s compassion, skill, and advocacy, we felt safe leaving my dad in his care. He was truly like an angel to our family during one of the scariest times of our lives.
