In the Labor and Delivery unit, patients who experience loss of a baby receive memory items, time with their loved one, and more.

Jana realized that those miscarrying at home might feel lost and confused and, despite not being our patient, needed resources. She decided to create a care kit that includes educational materials, vessels for transporting a baby to pathology or a funeral home, spray bottles, delivery assistance items, and materials for healing and grief support.

Jana realized that there were kits that were available to be bought but felt that they did not provide the message of love and care. The premade kits were also very expensive, and Jana felt she could make her own, but even better. Jana carefully selected each item to provide comfort, privacy, and beauty. She has collaborated with MVHC nursing staff, Genesis OB provider offices, Miles Mission (a nonprofit organization that aids in grief from pregnancy loss), Lab/Pathology, local funeral homes, and many others to ensure broad support for this initiative.

How the project supports the organization's values:

Compassion and Innovation are on display here because Jana is reaching the entire community and not just the patients that are being admitted to the L&D floor. Her compassion expands to every mother who is experiencing grief, no matter the gestation or location. Innovation is also supported because Jana has rotated through many different items with trial and error to make sure that each piece fits this kit. And not only size-wise, but she made sure not to get anything that seemed "cold" or "stiff". She wanted each piece to express love, warmth, and care. She also made sure to include educational items such as a sizing chart for gestation and what the fetus may look like once delivered at home.

Our OB Admin team is amazing and works together so well. Sarah is our director and has jumped through hoops to make sure this kit was processed. She has set up meetings and has been involved in decision-making. Tara, Andrea, CeCe, Heather, Angie, Missy, and Desiree have all been helping with decision-making, kit construction, sampling different items needed for the kit, and assisting with design. We have been the main people that Jana has been consulting to ensure that everything is working well.

This is something that has received the green light recently, and we haven't had the opportunity to see the long-term effects yet. All OB providers have stated how great this will be for their patients. It is important for each patient to know their baby existed and was loved, no matter the gestation.
