Charis is a nurse who, from all appearances and experience, goes above and beyond for all she encounters.
Clinical Skills:
I have an exceptionally rare condition. Andersen-Tawil syndrome hypokalemic periodic paralysis (ATS HYPO PP). Charis remembered not only me when I could not speak, but that I had a condition that affects about 1:1 million. As charts were being merged, as a potassium channel issue, I started to experience myoclonus and respiratory issues.

Charis acted quickly, asking for orders consistent with emergency protocol for my condition. She displayed extraordinary nursing ability while under extreme conditions by looking more into my condition to ensure she was correct. She delegated to numerous staff with effective and concise communication; she kept her composure and integrity throughout my experience, which led to lifesaving care. Please understand with ATS HYPO PP, some medications used in a protocol situation can be detrimental, and that was effectively communicated and coordinated.

Compassionate Care:
Upon arrival, I was having difficulty with speech due to my rare condition that can cause episodes of extreme muscle weakness and paralysis. I had issues with swallowing and was producing a lot of secretions. When Charis saw me, she grabbed my hand and assured me that she remembered me and that I was safe. While I was able to speak some, she took the time to listen to me struggle to explain that this visit felt very different than previous times; she took a history about my previous respiratory failure, all while holding my hand and showing nothing but concern for my wellbeing.

Exemplary Service:
Charis not only held my hand and quickly coordinated care for me, but she also said: “I’m not leaving her”. I believe this statement, combined with her critical thinking and compassion, saved my life. Without her knowledge, the physician would not have had the information to properly evaluate and treat me. I heard her say my oxygen levels (“sats”) were falling long after she asked if it was ok to intubate me. Charis is a nurse who, from all appearances and experience, goes above and beyond for all she encounters.

Continued Commitment:
Charis not only displayed a “not on my watch“ attitude and demeanor when it came to my health deteriorating in the emergency department rapidly. She showed that exemplary leadership, nursing, and overall human compassion are her mantra at Salem Health. This obviously is not my first time as her patient or as a patient in this hospital. Charis worked diligently, effectively, and quickly to use her knowledge about an extremely rare disease to save a patient’s life, and she did it because “that is just what she does”. It is my belief that situations like mine are reasons we should honor Nurses and others with the DAISY Award.

Signed, a grateful former nurse who is still alive.
