By preserving access to care, reducing patient stress, and maintaining a culture of kindness and teamwork under pressure, they not only overcame a significant challenge—they strengthened patient trust and reinforced the values that define exceptional nursing practice.
When a sudden water intrusion left our ambulatory surgery clinics without usable workspace for a month, the teams responded in a way that truly exemplified the spirit of the DAISY Team Award—demonstrating collaboration, compassion, and excellence in patient-centered care while living our mission to improve people’s lives.

Rather than allowing the disruption to delay care, our teams immediately partnered with surgeons, schedulers, and support staff to redesign workflows, relocate visits, and create alternative care pathways so patients could still be seen. Teams shared space, adjusted schedules, and flexed roles without hesitation. Daily communication and rapid problem-solving ensured that care continued safely and efficiently. Because of these efforts, visit volumes remained close to baseline, cancellations were minimized, and patients experienced little interruption in access to needed surgical and wound care.

What made this response exceptional was not only the operational success but the compassion behind it. Teams proactively contacted patients, explained changes, reassured those who were anxious about delays, and accommodated individual needs whenever possible. Patients expressed gratitude for the clear communication and the team’s willingness to “make it work” for them during an uncertain time.

Throughout the month, staff consistently supported one another with positivity and professionalism—there was no negative talk or resistance, only a shared commitment to doing what was best for patients.

This experience demonstrated how deeply our ambulatory nursing teams embody our mission to improve people’s lives. By preserving access to care, reducing patient stress, and maintaining a culture of kindness and teamwork under pressure, they not only overcame a significant challenge—they strengthened patient trust and reinforced the values that define exceptional nursing practice.

Their collaboration, compassion, and dedication make them truly deserving of recognition through the DAISY Team Award.

I am so grateful for my staff and the incredible teams that I have the honor and privilege to lead.
