The care he provided did not simply meet the standards; it redefined them.
I would like Colby to be recognized for the extraordinary care he provided.
My mother went into cardiac arrest incredibly suddenly while Colby was on shift. This was the most traumatic and devastating day of my life. In the middle of chaos, fear, and heartbreak, Colby’s kindness, patience, and compassion stood out in a way I will never forget. Colby took the time to walk my sister and me through what was happening as best he could, explaining things with honesty, calmness, and empathy.
He was a breath of fresh air during the worst moment our family has ever experienced. Despite the immense pressure of the situation – and despite extremely challenging behavior from my stepfather – Colby continued to care for my mother with unwavering professionalism, respect, and dignity. He treated her with the kindness and humanity she deserves during this critical time.
I am currently sitting in my mother’s ICU room, completely devastated, and every time Colby walks in, he does so with a compassionate smile that somehow brings comfort in the middle of so much pain. One moment that I will carry with me forever happened overnight. I was sleeping on the couch in the room, freezing. I woke up feeling warmth around me – Colby had quietly covered me with a warm blanket after noticing I was cold. He was not there to care for me; he was there to care for his patient – my mom- yet he still showed such thoughtfulness and humanity.
I have never met someone more deserving of recognition. Colby has walked us through an unimaginable situation with grace, compassion, and strength. His kindness will never be forgotten. If anyone deserves the DAISY Award, it is Colby from the ICU Burn Unit. Please thank him for me, and recognize him for the incredible nurse and human being he is.
He showed me exactly the kind of person Sentara should be proud to have representing their facilities – and the kind of nurse any family would be incredibly lucky to have during their time of tragic need.

During this incredibly critical and complex hospitalization that our family member is currently enduring, Colby has provided exceptional care alongside the rest of her care team. Colby has exemplified kindness, attention to detail, competence, confidence, and compassionate care for our loved one and for all of us, her family and friends.
Colby has gone above and beyond to ensure that our loved one remained cared for as a person, a human being, and not just all of the machines she was hooked up to. Colby has a very calm demeanor, often asked family if there was anything he could do, and was prepared to help answer questions.
