Her experience with chemotherapy allowed her to teach new staff and provide guidance during a time when uncertainty felt heavy.
Lori accepted the position of Nurse Manager of the Cancer Center at a time of great need. Our center had lost our physician, and we were working under locum tenens providers, which was enough to make anyone question their role. She led the staff during the transitional time and has done so successfully. She models great nursing leadership; that alone is not what has shown her value as a leader. It is the step into staffing, taking on caseloads, and serving patients, while her own workload has been placed on the back burner during staff transitions, that has shown patients and her staff that she comes first. Her experience with chemotherapy allowed her to teach new staff and provide guidance during a time when uncertainty felt heavy. Losing long-term employees and the comfort staff had come to depend on can be unsettling, and having a manager who is willing to step in and take responsibility speaks volumes about her core values. Patients have not experienced any of these transitions due to Lori's action and leadership. While alone, I speak of our medical oncology department; she covers radiation oncology, ambulatory care, wound care, pain management, and radiology. She never says no when upper management asks her about fatigue or other obligations. I believe this write-up alone is not enough to say the power of what she has done to change the face, environment, and lives of those she touches here with the cancer center. A leader is someone who demonstrates what is possible.
