I would like to nominate Allie Pitre, RN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional skill, attentiveness, and unwavering dedication to orthopedic patient care.
Allie is an outstanding orthopedic nurse whose attention to detail truly sets her apart. In a specialty where even the smallest change can significantly impact outcomes, she consistently demonstrates vigilance, precision, and clinical excellence. From carefully monitoring neurovascular checks to ensuring proper alignment, mobility precautions, and pain control, Allie never overlooks the details that keep her patients safe.
One patient care moment that stands out involved a post-operative total knee replacement patient who was experiencing increasing discomfort and mild swelling. While these symptoms can be expected after surgery, Allie noticed subtle differences during her assessment — slightly increased firmness in the calf, changes in reported pain quality, and mild anxiety from the patient. Trusting her assessment skills, she promptly escalated her concerns and advocated for further evaluation. Because of her attentiveness, a developing complication was identified early and treated before it could progress.
Equally remarkable was how she cared for the patient emotionally. The patient later shared that Allie took the time to sit at the bedside and explain what was happening in clear, reassuring terms. She adjusted pillows for comfort, carefully repositioned the surgical limb, and reassured the patient by saying, “You’re not just a room number — I’m watching everything closely.” That simple but powerful statement left a lasting impression on both the patient and their family.
