2nd Nomination:
Sometimes, true leadership is not seen in titles or positions, but in quiet, timely actions that make a profound difference in someone’s moment of need. I experienced such a moment, and it is the reason I wholeheartedly nominate Rakhi, OPD Head Nurse, for the DAISY Award in Leadership.
I visited one of the clinics for a routine follow-up appointment after a recent operation. While the visit itself was planned, what I had not anticipated was the level of discomfort I would be in that day. I was experiencing moderate pain, and even sitting in the waiting area became increasingly difficult. Despite this, I understood the system and knew that my appointment time was still about 30 minutes away. Like many patients, I chose to wait quietly, trying to manage my discomfort.
At that moment, something remarkable happened. An angel passed by—in the form of Ma’am Rakhi. Amidst what I could clearly see was a busy clinical environment, she noticed me. Not just as another patient in the waiting area, but as someone who was not doing well. Without hesitation, she approached me with genuine concern and a calm, reassuring presence. She gently asked if there was anything she could do to help. I explained my situation and the pain I was experiencing.
What followed was not just efficiency, but true leadership in action. She immediately took initiative, coordinating with the concerned staff and physician to ensure that I was seen without delay. There was no confusion, no unnecessary waiting—just swift, decisive action focused entirely on patient well-being.
However, what left a lasting impression on me was that her care did not end there. While I was being treated in the treatment room, Ms. Rakhi continued to check on me frequently. She ensured that my pain was addressed, that I was comfortable, and that all my needs were fulfilled. Her presence brought a sense of reassurance and safety that cannot be measured. She transformed what could have been a stressful and painful experience into one that felt supported, dignified, and compassionate.
Out of curiosity and gratitude, I later asked the staff about her. I was astonished to learn that she is the Head Nurse managing multiple clinics. It is not easy to carry such a responsibility, and yet, she remains so deeply connected to individual patient care.
What I witnessed next further defined her as an exceptional leader. Even with her demanding role, she was continuously present on the floor—making rounds, observing, guiding, and supporting. She was not only attentive to patients but equally invested in her team. I saw her checking on staff members, asking if they needed help, listening to their concerns, and offering support. Her approach was not authoritative, but empowering.
She creates an environment where staff feel heard, respected, and motivated to give their best. Her leadership is reflected in the atmosphere around her—calm, organized, and compassionate. She manages complexity with grace, ensuring that operations run smoothly while maintaining high standards of care. Her ability to balance patient needs, staff well-being, and operational demands is truly commendable.
As someone who also works in a managerial position, I understand how challenging it is to lead a large and diverse team with different personalities, mindsets, and cultural backgrounds. It requires patience, emotional intelligence, strong decision-making, and the ability to inspire others. Rakhi demonstrates all of these qualities effortlessly.
She leads by example—through her actions, her presence, and her unwavering commitment to excellence. Her communication is clear and respectful; her decisions are timely and patient-focused. There is so much one can learn from observing her. She is not only a leader but also a mentor, a supporter, and a source of strength for both patients and staff. Her kindness creates comfort, and her leadership builds confidence.
In that moment when I needed help, she did not see me as just another patient.
This is Rakhi's 2nd DAISY Award!
