As a senior nursing student at the University of North Georgia, Ciara Hourican goes above and beyond to advocate for patient education and care. On one of her clinical education shifts, Ciara went out of her way to stay and sit with a patient on the postpartum unit who was not understanding the purpose of a flu shot and had not been provided information about the flu shot. She spent the time to make sure the patient knew why it is recommended postpartum and ensured that the patient had resources for the flu vaccine if she decided she wanted to receive a shot. Additionally, one of Ciara's other patients on the labor and delivery unit was requesting water and commenting on how difficult it was to drink water from the water machine as it had a metallic taste. While on her break, Ciara went above and beyond to buy her patient bottled water, as she knew the patient's family would not be there to help her for an extended period of time and would not be able to bring the water to her.
