I received a call from the GICH imaging department because they were receiving calls from a patient who had recently had a procedure and had some concerns. The patient had been referred to home care following the procedure, and there was a plan to admit the patient the next day. As the hours ticked down, the patient’s anxiety grew. He was worried about his symptoms and felt like he needed to be seen sooner. Without home care in place, the only other option to get the care he needed was a trip to the emergency department. Our home care schedule for the day was full. All nurses had a full schedule that day and were out caring for their patients.

I reached out to Colleen to see if there was any possibility she could help. Colleen’s day was completely full. She had just completed a new home care admission and a follow-up visit, and her workday was scheduled to end at 4:30. Still, without hesitation, she said yes. She rearranged her schedule and agreed to see the patient at 4:00, ensuring he could receive care at home rather than making a stressful and unnecessary trip to the emergency department. Because of Colleen’s compassion and flexibility, the patient felt heard, supported, and safe. What could have been a long, overwhelming night in the emergency room ended with relief and reassurance in the best possible place: his home. Colleen’s attitude and compassion were admirable, and it’s obvious that her dedication goes beyond the schedule and with her patients.
