I am nominating Jacqueline Gutierrez for the Clinical Excellence DAISY Award for her continued dedication to providing the highest-quality care to her patients. As a colleague and preceptor, she leads by displaying compassion and kindness towards the patients she cares for, as recently demonstrated when she went above and beyond to help a patient avoid future re-hospitalizations due to uncontrolled blood pressure. This patient presented to the ED suffering a hypertensive crisis due to medication noncompliance. It was later discovered that this patient was not taking her medication, not because she did not have them or did not want to take them, but because she couldn’t read and therefore did not understand how to take her medication. After discovering this information, Jackie went to the patient’s room with different-colored writing utensils, marked her medications with the different colors after designating each color a time of day, and ultimately found a way to help this patient take her prescribed medications as ordered in a way she could understand. Jacqueline is an extraordinary nurse, and I am incredibly grateful to have had the privilege of having her as a preceptor and mentor.
