In everything she does, Denise shows dedication, compassion, and a deep commitment to the growth of others.
Denise has a way of making everything meaningful.

As the Nurse Residency Program Coordinator, she pours her heart into supporting new licensed nurses, and they are at the center of her daily work. She plans classes, refines content to ensure it’s truly useful, and shows up as both a teacher and a compassionate support system.

She has an exceptional relationship with her residents, offering a listening ear, encouragement, and sometimes even a shoulder to cry on. She stays after nearly every monthly class—often well past the scheduled end time—just to help someone who needs a little extra care. And she does this for three cohorts, meaning she’s guiding a tremendous number of new nurses at once.

Denise embodies the pursuit of evidence-based practice. She stays current with every ANPD journal edition and devours any article she can find to help her improve the program. She selects relevant research for the Preceptor Journal Club and creates thoughtful questions to help preceptors grow in their practice. Her work is always grounded in the latest evidence and delivered using strong adult-learning principles that make learning accessible, engaging, and practical.

Denise demonstrates a genuine practice of presence and relationship-building.

One of my favorite things she does is her coloring activity with residents. She has them color while she gently asks how things are going—on the unit, with their preceptors, with life. It starts quietly, but as they relax into the coloring, the real conversations begin. Feelings come out. Stories start flowing. It’s simple, but incredibly powerful in creating a safe environment where new nurses feel seen and supported.

She strongly aligns with and advances the goals of the hospital and division of nursing through her leadership of the NRP Board, which brings together NKC Health staff and local educators to continuously improve the program.

She is also part of the preceptor group, working to support and uplift preceptors—those who carry such an important role in shaping new nurses. She infuses creativity into these meetings with her FLAMINGO (Fun, Lively, Admirable Mentors, Inspiring Nurses, and Growing Our Own) theme, finding countless ways to connect the flamingo concept to preceptor work. It’s playful, meaningful, and memorable. She even brought CE offerings to the meetings to help preceptors meet education goals and feel valued for the work they do.

As a role model and mentor, Denise is steady, calm, and endlessly encouraging. She is the kind of person who helps you believe you can do hard things. She serves on the peer review committee with a nonjudgmental, grounded presence that helps ease tension and promote fairness. She is also the person you can go to when you need help brainstorming ideas—she gets the wheels turning and helps you think through things in a meaningful way.

In everything she does, Denise shows dedication, compassion, and a deep commitment to the growth of others. She is a powerful advocate for new nurses and preceptors alike, and she makes our health system better through the relationships she builds and the thoughtful, evidence-based work she leads.
