The patient is 110 days sober today and identified George as a key person in his recovery.
George was working in the mental health hallway when a patient going through withdrawals went into his care. I began to work on finding a detox placement for this patient and was experiencing many barriers. It was extremely stressful for both the patient and me. George not only ensured that the patient was physically comfortable but also provided empathy and compassion. The time he took to focus on this patient helped ease a very stressful experience. Secondly, my stress was eased knowing how the patient was being cared for. At the end of my shift, I found a placement for the patient. This put me in the unfortunate position of being unable to complete the tasks required to successfully transfer the patient. George took on a responsibility that he could have chosen not to, as it is not part of his job. He worked with the facility, which required multiple phone calls and the submission of documents. He also made sure I was kept updated throughout the entire process. These transfers require a significant amount of time and energy and can be incredibly stressful. Knowing how this process works, I know that there was much more involved than I was unaware of while I was at home. Yesterday, that patient reached out to me. He expressed immense gratitude for everything George did for him and for the kindness he showed. The patient is 110 days sober today and identified George as a key person in his recovery. Without the care and dedication George gave this patient, it is very likely he would never have made it to treatment. With this population, that is the difference between life and death. I am so very grateful to work with George, and it is extremely special to see the positive impact he has on patients and staff.
