With no family available to speak on his behalf, she became his voice by raising her concerns and suggestions with leadership and our facility physicians.
A patient was admitted to our facility for rehabilitation after a stroke. He lived alone and had no family support. During his stay, his heart rate was highly erratic, ranging from 41 to 140 beats per minute. Lindsay became concerned because he was symptomatic, said he did not feel well, and was unable to participate in therapy. He was sent to the acute care hospital for evaluation of a possible evolving stroke or cardiac issue, but initial testing found nothing. Because Lindsay still believed something was medically wrong, she continued to advocate for him. With no family available to speak on his behalf, she became his voice by raising her concerns and suggestions with leadership and our facility physicians. The patient was later sent back to the acute care hospital, along with a call from our physician conveying Lindsay’s concerns. He was then evaluated by Cardiology and finally received the diagnostic testing and treatment he needed. Lindsay’s persistence and advocacy may have saved his life and, at a minimum, helped him continue his recovery from the stroke.
