During the incident, Emilee remained calm, delegated to staff to help, remained professional, and was able to create a safe work environment for staff and patients.
With great admiration and respect, I nominate Emilee Neiman for the DAISY Award.

A patient was admitted, and I met with him and introduced myself. He said he recognized me from previous admissions. I informed him that I will go over his discharge aftercare when it’s time for discharge.

A few hours later, this patient reported that discharge was discussed with him, and he demanded to be discharged now. I was informed by Emilee and went out into the hallway where the patient stood beside the exit doors. I explained to the patient my role in his discharge, and it was up to him and his Psychiatrist to decide when he was going to be discharged.

The patient became upset and physically aggressive with me by backhanding me in the face. I briefly lost consciousness, and he cornered me in the doorway with his fists drawn.

I immediately yelled for help, and Emilee came running out of the staff station, got in between us, and directed the patient to move away from the area. I was able to get to safety, the situation quickly deescalated without further injuries.

During the incident Emilee remained calm, delegated to staff to help assist, remained professional, and was able to create a safe work environment for staff and patients.

I feel Emilee deserves the DAISY Award for her heroic act, controlling the situation quickly with courage and making sure I was safe. Emilee is truly a great role model for our team.
