Because of Sydney’s compassion, advocacy, and extraordinary effort, this couple was able to spend their final moments together, surrounded by dignity, love, and peace.
Sydney was the nurse for Mrs. M, who had been a patient in our ICU for nearly two weeks. Mrs. M had fought incredibly hard, but ultimately her family made the selfless and loving decision to transition her to Comfort Measures. During these difficult conversations, the family confided in Sydney that they deeply regretted a past decision with their father, who was currently in a rehabilitation facility. They shared that they wished they had chosen comfort-focused care for him as well, as his current quality of life is not what they had hoped for or expected.

Sydney listened to this family with compassion, empathy, and understanding. She took the time to truly hear their wishes and ensured they were honored. She spoke with the doctor to advocate for the family’s desire to keep Mrs. M comfortable and allow her to pass peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

At the same time, the family received a call from the rehabilitation facility stating that their father had become acutely ill and needed to be transferred to a hospital. Without hesitation, Sydney sprang into action. She coordinated communication between the family, the rehab facility, and the doctor to arrange for Mr. M to be brought to Northside Hospital Cherokee. Through her advocacy and determination, he was admitted to the ICU and placed in the room next to his wife.

After further discussions with the doctor, the family decided on Comfort Measures for Mr. M as well. Sydney then went above and beyond anything that could ever be expected. She rearranged the room and worked with the team to move Mr. and Mrs. M next to each other so they could hold hands during their final moments together. They had been married for 63 years and, until recently, had never been apart.

Mrs. M passed away peacefully that evening. Mr. M followed within 24 hours. Because of Sydney’s compassion, advocacy, and extraordinary effort, this couple was able to spend their final moments together, surrounded by dignity, love, and peace.

This was one of the most touching experiences I have ever witnessed in the ICU. Sydney created an experience for this family that they will cherish forever during the most devastating time of their lives. She exemplified the very essence of nursing—selflessness, humanity, and compassion. Sydney ensured that both patients died with dignity and grace, offering the kind of care we would all hope to receive for ourselves or our loved ones in their final moments.

Sydney is an exceptional nurse, and moments like this make it abundantly clear. She did not just care for her patients—she honored their love story and changed a family’s experience of loss forever. She is profoundly deserving of the DAISY Award.
