Jen didn’t just clock in; she showed up emotionally and spiritually.
There are people whose presence and quiet strength stay with you long after they’ve left. Nurse Jen is one of those rare individuals. In the final days of my partner, P, she cared for him on the William Wilde Ward with extraordinary empathy and devotion. I write this with immense gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility to honour someone who brought us peace in our darkest hours. When you’re watching someone you love slip away, you remember everything: the tone of a voice, small gestures that help you breathe. Jen gave us all of that. She didn’t just treat P as a patient. One moment stands out. P was unresponsive, near the end. Jen warmed her hands before tending to him, then gently whispered, “I’m sorry, P, for disturbing you.” It was a simple act, but deeply human. She didn’t have to do that. No one would have noticed if she hadn’t, but we did. In that gesture, she reminded us that P still mattered. He wasn’t just a bed number. He was a person, a partner, a father, and she treated him with unwavering dignity. Jen communicated with clarity and kindness, explaining painful realities with patience. Her presence offered us peace we didn’t think possible. Her clinical knowledge was clear, but it was her humanity that elevated her care to something remarkable.

From P’s children: Watching your father fade is indescribable, but having someone like Jen beside us will stay with us forever. Over three days, we witnessed true nursing. Jen didn’t just clock in; she showed up emotionally and spiritually. She spoke to our Dad with tenderness, as if he could hear every word. She gave us comfort, helping us begin to find peace. She was attentive, never intrusive. She explained what was happening with clarity, answered questions with patience, and offered calm when we couldn’t find our own. In a time of immense loss, Jen was a lighthouse. Her care wasn’t just professional, it was profoundly personal. She reminded us that quiet heroes walk among us, not in capes, but in scrubs. You once apologised for disturbing him. But Jen, please know, you didn’t disturb anything. You brought calm, light, and grace. You mattered. And you always will. This nomination is not just a thank you. It is a testament to your impact. It is proof, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are not only deserving of the DAISY Award, but you are also the very embodiment of why it exists.
