Kate not only kept me comfortable and calm, but she also reminded me of the humanity of nursing.
Kate was my PACU nurse when I underwent an extreme orthopedic surgery. I was hospitalized for seven days. Kate not only kept me comfortable and calm, but she also reminded me of the humanity of nursing.

While I was in the PACU recovering, I requested paper/pencil to draw under anesthesia; I planned my whole wedding. Now that part is important to remember! Flash forward, and I was back for the same orthopedic procedure. I am 27 years old, very fit and motivated, but this surgery knocked me off my feet. I was back at BCH, anxious as can be. In walks Kate! She remembered me! Of course, because she is an excellent nurse.

She held my hand until I went back. When I came out of surgery, there was Kate! And she had purchased colored pencils and a coloring book to keep patients calm after anesthesia because she remembered how much it helped. Kate’s kindness does not end there, once I was settled in my room, Kate walks in! She has a teddy bear from the gift shop with a card congratulating me on my engagement. Are you kidding?

It has become a tradition to take a photo; I've had six surgeries here and will need one final one before I return to regular life. I continually talk about the impact Kate had on me and how she will continue to show up for her patients on their darkest days - it is so appreciated!
