I would like to recognize an exceptional nurse, Sara D., whose compassion and dedication brought comfort to my family during one of the most painful moments of our lives. In hospice, as my dad was passing, Sara D. demonstrated a level of professionalism, empathy, and humanity that went far beyond what we ever could have expected.

Our first encounter wasn’t easy after a long and difficult morning in the MICU, I approached her with a combative tone, fueled by stress and heartbreak. Despite this, Sara responded with nothing but calm professionalism and sincere empathy. She listened, understood, and cared. That moment set the tone for every interaction that followed. 

Throughout every shift she had with us, Sara D. ensured that we were included in every decision. She questioned each step she planned to take in my dad’s care. Not out of uncertainty, but out of respect. She wanted to make absolutely sure that her actions aligned with our wishes and honored my dad’s dignity. Her attentiveness extended beyond her clinical responsibilities; she continually checked on us as a family, making sure we had what we needed to feel supported and comfortable.

Sara’s warm, caring, and compassionate demeanor was evident in everything she did. In the midst of sadness, grief, and uncertainty, she was a steady source of comfort. Every encounter with her eased our burden just a little more. For her extraordinary kindness, unwavering patience, and remarkable heart, we are deeply grateful. Sara D. made an unbearable experience more bearable, and we will never forget the grace she extended to my dad and to all of us.
