Knowing how difficult this experience had been for him, she crocheted a small duck and brought it in to give to him.
I would like to nominate our wound care RN, Olivia Rogers for the DAISY Award for the incredible compassion, skill, and support she showed to one of our patients during a very difficult moment in his hospitalization. This patient has been dealing with a severe and extremely painful wound that has required complex care. The physical pain, combined with the emotional toll of being confined to the bed, had become overwhelming for him. At one point he was in tears from both pain and frustration, feeling discouraged and exhausted by the situation. When Olivia came to see him, she brought not only her clinical expertise but also genuine compassion. She assessed and managed his complex wound with confidence and skill, but what truly stood out was the way she cared for him as a person, not just as a patient. Knowing how difficult this experience had been for him, she crocheted a small duck and brought it in to give to him. It was such a thoughtful and personal gesture, and it completely changed the moment. During their conversation, you could see his mood begin to shift. By the end, the patient who had been in tears earlier was smiling and laughing. That simple act of kindness reminded him that he was more than his illness and that someone truly cared about his comfort and well-being. Her impact did not stop there. The patients wound requires a complex dressing change, and she took the time to patiently walk me through the process step-by-step. She explained everything in a way that made it easy to understand and helped build my confidence in performing the dressing change safely and effectively. Even after that interaction, she continued to check in both on the patient and on me to make sure things were going well and to see if I needed any support. That kind of follow-through and teamwork makes an enormous difference for bedside nurses and ultimately improves the care we provide to our patients. In a moment when this patient felt overwhelmed by pain and hospitalization, she brought comfort, dignity, and even a little joy back into his day. Her compassion for her patient and support for her colleagues truly exemplify Carolina Care. Olivia Rogers is an extraordinary nurse, and I cannot think of someone more deserving of recognition through the DAISY Award.
