This winter has been especially challenging for Veterans and their mental health. The combination of seasonal effects and reasons for an emergency room visit can create significant distress. Last week in the ED, a Veteran in LSR was speaking with a social worker, expressing his concerns with increasing intensity until he was shouting aggressively. Casey Botelho immediately stepped in to support the social worker and intervene.

Casey is exceptional in her ability to adapt during high-stress situations. She was able to calmly and assertively redirect the Veteran, creating space for de-escalation. Casey acknowledged the difficulties the Veteran was facing and reassured him that our team was there to help. With grace, she set boundaries and established the expectation of mutual respect, ensuring he received the care he needed while supporting both her colleague and the Veteran. Casey Botelho exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding RN and a compassionate individual. This is just one of many instances demonstrating her dedication to providing Veterans with respect, dignity, and high-quality healthcare.
